operation desperation
Description
Janai Children’s Home takes in and cares for abandoned
abused, neglected and handicapped babies and toddlers in a family environment.
The organization has twenty-three children at the moment and the rooms they stay
in were in desperate need of painting. There were ten bedrooms and a very long
passage, plus the doors and ceilings that needed to be painted. The doors would
also need to be sanded down before they were painted.
The aim of this project was to let the children feel proud
of their home that was in desperate need of a coat of paint.

Feedback from the project
The organization has 23 children at the moment and the
rooms they stay in are in desperate need of painting. There are 10 bedrooms and
a very long passage plus the doors and ceilings that need to be painted. The
doors would also need to be sanded down before they get painted.
On Tuesday 4th November, first crew of 14 people from both
AVI offices led by Rob arrived, just after 08:00, introduced and shown around
and informed what needed to be done. Quickly group split up and various chores
were tackled before painting begun. Masking tape on windows, dusting down,
preparation work carried out. Painting started with primer coat on bare
plastered walls, followed by first coat of wall paint. This was done on front
side of house, nine bedrooms two lounges and 6 bathrooms where covered. Lunch
was had, supplied by AVI. I supplied a drum of oros as weather was warm,
although towards 14:00 cloud build was heavy and only work started was finished
At 14:30. Children arrived from school, and mixed with staff. After cleaning and
packing paint on veranda crew left.
On Wednesday 5th November, second crew of eleven people led
by Paul arrived, just after 08:00. Due to weather, heavy cloud cover, it was
decided to get stuck in and paint. Second coat of paint put on walls, window
frames, burglar bars, window sills and facia boards painted. After cleaning up
and packing away, folks taken through home, spoke to children and a lot of
photographs taken.
Our sincere thanks to all concern that made both days such
a success, and most of all given our home such a beautiful face lift.
Thanks to Greater Good SA for the organizing behind the
scenes, e-mails and phone calls appreciated. God bless for the enthusiastic
approach by all and for the great job accomplished.
